The ultimate guide to washable rugs and how to care for them

Published by Tara Punter | March 25th, 2026

We don’t know about you, but here at Heugah Interiors March feels like a turning point in the year. The mornings are getting lighter, the evenings stretch out a little longer every day and it won’t be long before we’re sitting outside for alfresco drinks. Of course, the arrival of spring does mean that our list of household chores starts to grow again after a winter lull. Gardens need attention again, dirt and water spots on the windows suddenly show up when the sun shines through them and the urge to spring clean everything becomes very hard to ignore.

After a winter of muddy boots (this year they were VERY muddy boots), damp paws and spills and splashes of teas and coffees carried through the house on dark mornings, many of us are ready to get out the cleaning tools and scrub. And when you’re in the middle of a spring clean, your mind might just wander to ways you can make cleaning and caring for your home easier…

Anything that makes the process of cleaning our homes is very attractive when you’re hoovering, dusting and mopping. A robot vacuum – maybe even one that washes the floor too – sounds very appealing. It’s also probably why washable rugs are gaining in popularity all the time too. Who doesn’t want floor coverings that combine convenience with beautiful design? And from cotton styles that are perfect for children’s rooms, indoor/outdoor rugs for patios, conservatories and garden rooms to innovative washable wool rugs that bring warmth without compromise, there are options for every space.

Why washable rugs are so popular with families

We know that your homes are busy places. Between school runs or visiting grandkids, hectic workdays, pets (and the dirty paws, hair and gritty floors they bring), visitors and everyday living, dirt is part of life. But a washable rug means you can let people enjoy themselves and still enjoy clean and fresh floors when you feel like it.

Instead of fretting over muddy footprints in the hallway or drink spills under the dining table, you know the rug can simply go in the washing machine at 30 degrees and come out looking refreshed.

Washable rugs are particularly well suited to:

  • Kitchens and dining areas
  • Hallways and entrances
  • Utility rooms
  • Homes with pets
  • Children’s bedrooms and nurseries

They offer softness underfoot and absorb sound while standing up to daily wear, a balance that makes them especially appealing for families and those of you in the countryside!

A closer look at washable wool rugs

Wool has long been loved for its warmth, durability and natural texture, and that’s made it a popular choice for rugs and mats. Traditionally, however, traditional wool rugs require more careful cleaning. That’s why the introduction of washable wool designs has been such an exciting development – we love the Woolable designs, like this one!

Washable wool rugs offer the best of both worlds. You still benefit from wool’s natural insulation, softness and durability, but with the added convenience of the rug being machine washable at 30 degrees. They’re ideal for living rooms, bedrooms and family spaces where you want a slightly more elevated look without sacrificing practicality.

Wool is also naturally stain-resistant (to a point!) thanks to the lanolin within its fibres. It resists dirt and helps prevent spills from soaking in immediately, giving you precious time to deal with any mishaps. Combined with the ability to wash the rug at home, it makes washable wool a great choice for busy households.

Cotton and lightweight washable designs

Cotton, like this one from Lorena Canals, remains a firm favourite when it comes to machine washable rugs. Lightweight, breathable and soft to the touch, cotton rugs are particularly popular in children’s rooms and kitchens. They are easy to lift, wash and reshape and many designs now feature layered textures and brighter colours, meaning practicality doesn’t need to be at the expense of style or fun colours.

Washable indoor/outdoor rugs

Washable rugs that are designed to be used inside your home and outdoors are another wonderfully practical option. With spring around the corner and summer on the horizon, being able to extend your living spaces outdoors is the perfect way to enjoy warm, sunny days. We have a huge range of washable indoor/outdoor rugs that are made from a 11mm high pile of 100% recycled PET (made from plastic bottles) that’s woven to look and feel like a classic fabric or wool rug!

They offer impressive durability and resistance to mould and mildew while still feeling soft underfoot. They’re a great choice for high-traffic family rooms, playrooms and garden rooms, and they work just as well on patios or balconies during the warmer months. They can be spot cleaned with water and a mild detergent if needed, so they’re very easy to care for – just hang them in the sun or a breeze to dry them off afterwards!

How to clean a washable rug properly

Even though there are now lots of rugs to choose from that are designed to be washed, a little preparation goes a long way and will save your washing machine from too much heavy lifting! Here are some helpful tips:

  • Shake the rug outdoors to remove loose dirt.
  • Vacuum gently before washing.
  • Use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener.
  • Wash on a cool, gentle cycle (typically 30 degrees).
  • Reshape the rug while damp and allow it to air dry fully before placing it back in position.

Plus, regular vacuuming and prompt spot cleaning will keep your rug looking smart and reduce the need for frequent full washes in the machine

Caring for rugs that can’t go in the washing machine

While washable rugs are wonderfully convenient, not every material should go in the machine. Understanding how to care for each type will keep your entire collection looking its best.

Standard wool rugs

Wool is naturally durable and resistant to staining. Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting and blot spills immediately with a clean cloth. For deeper cleaning, professional rug cleaning is often the safest option.

Recycled PET and indoor-outdoor rugs

These synthetic fibres are incredibly hard-wearing and moisture resistant. Many can be hosed down outdoors or wiped clean with mild detergent, making them ideal for kitchens, entrances and garden rooms.

Natural fibre rugs (jute and sisal)

Natural fibres add beautiful texture but should never be soaked. Instead, vacuum frequently and blot spills quickly. Excess moisture can weaken the fibres, so dry cleaning or professional advice is recommended if deeper cleaning is needed.

Understanding the nature of each material helps you choose the right rug for the right room, and care for it confidently.

Are washable rugs right for every room?

Washable rugs are wonderfully versatile, but the best choice always depends on how you use the space. In children’s bedrooms and playrooms, they’ll quickly become your favourite thing, allowing kids to play, snack and drink without you worrying about spillages. In kitchens and dining areas, they offer a helping hand where spills are common. In hallways and country homes they mean you can still have a beautifully clean home even with the realities of outdoor life. In more formal sitting rooms or master bedrooms, washable wool and cotton designs strike the perfect balance between elegance and practicality.
