How to use outdoor rugs to create sociable alfresco living spaces

Published by Tara Punter | August 15th, 2022

We’re writing this blog the week after swathes of central and eastern England baked in
record-breaking temperatures, and even here in the Cotswolds, we can confirm it did
get rather hot! We were lucky to escape the worst of it, and for some it was an
opportunity to enjoy some warm summer sunshine in the tranquillity of their own
gardens. Whereas kitting out your outdoor living space in the UK used to consist of a
charcoal barbecue and a set of white plastic outdoor tables and chairs, things have
ramped up quite a bit in recent years.

Now, we can choose from an array of different outdoor seating, from conversation sets
and outdoor sofas (with side tables and even outdoor lamps!), to beautiful dining tables
and chairs, loungers, hammocks and plenty more. Swimming pools (including the on-
trend natural swimming ponds which we adore), hot tubs and outdoor kitchens and
cinema screens are all seen as essential for some, and very much lusted after by
others.

So how can you make your outdoor space both functional and welcoming?

Some people choose to ‘zone’ their patio or decking, just the same way as people use
zoning in open plan interiors to create different spaces. Instead of walls indicating where
to sit to eat, chat or relax, items such as screens and rugs are artfully used instead.
Zoning your outdoor living space will create wonderfully sociable or intimate spaces to
relax with friends and family – or cook up a storm on the BBQ! We love using
indoor/outdoor rugs for seating areas to create a homely space where people can kick
off their shoes and enjoy some summer sunshine. This trend has made its way over
from the US, where outdoor living is really big business, and now here at Heugah we
have a wide selection of indoor/outdoor rugs. We’re especially excited by the latest
latest Brink and Campman indoor outdoor rug designs which are available in heaps of
gorgeous designs and colours. Let’s take a closer look at what makes them so special.

Each Brink and Campman indoor/outdoor rug is handwoven from an innovative material
which is made from recycled plastic bottles, breathing new life into waste which so often
ends up in landfill. The material looks and feels nothing like carpet and adds a cosy
layer to a patio or deck – or even a lawn if you like! The recycled fibres also mean the
rugs won’t fade in the sunshine and will cope perfectly well with the changeable weather
we get here in the UK. When the rugs get rained on, simply leave them to dry out and just make sure they are properly dry before packing them away at the end of the
summer.
