Home accessories to make your house a cosy, welcoming space this autumn

Published by Tara Punter | October 30th, 2022

We’re just days away from the clocks going back, Halloween is peeking around the corner and the weather is slowly but surely turning cooler. That means it’s time to embrace those dark evenings and shut out the chill of the night by transforming your home into a cosy sanctuary. If you’re not sure where to start, here are five top tips to help you nail that hygge autumn vibe this year.

Make an all-natural autumnal wreath

A little look around Pinterest or Instagram will help you come up with some ideas for an autumnal wreath or decoration and you can hang it on your front door or inside, depending on how much you’d like to look at it. That might be dried stems from the garden or a little foraging when you’re on an autumnal walk. Two big bonuses to going all-natural – no more plastic (which will still be here in hundreds of years’ time) and it’s totally free!

Go for soft lighting in the evenings

Overhead lighting, especially from LED spotlights, can be harsh and won’t give you that autumnal glow we’re after. A few lamps placed around each room will give you a soft, relaxing light and make the house feel far cosier. We also love dotting tea lights and candles around the living room if we’re relaxing or on the dining table for a snug ambience. Make sure they are in safe holders and on heat proof mats, of course – and don’t leave them unattended.

Grab a versatile sheepskin rug

Here at Heugah we’re big fans of home accessories that can be used in lots of different ways, and so a sheepskin definitely gets our vote. Sheepskins can be used as a cosy rug in your bedroom, home office or living room, draped over a favourite chair or sofa, used to provide some cushioning on a kitchen or utility room bench and are a very snug lining for a dog bed or crate if you want to spoil your pet. They are hypoallergenic, help with thermoregulation (keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer) and the natural fibres mean they will break down over time, you throw them away. We have sheepskins here in Origin Rugs.

Stop damp and dirt at the door

It’s a fact of life that autumn and winter in the UK comes with plenty of wet weather, which means you need to be prepared to catch dirt, mud and water at the door. That way it won’t get tracked all over your home and you can keep living rooms clean and neat. The Hug Rug Design Doormats are the perfect solution! They trap 95% of dust, wet mud and dirt at the door and come in a wide range of designs for all sorts of home styles. Think Highland cows, pheasants, bees, spotty and striped patterns, plain colours and even autumn leaves. Take a closer look at Hug Rug mats here.

Have a throw within reach for cold nights

The weather can be quite unpredictable at this time of year, with the occasional cold night popping up to take us by surprise. A warm throw means you can combat the chill without cranking the heating up, something which could prove costly this autumn and winter. The Hug Rug Woven collection includes 27 different colours and designs of cosy throws which all look and feel just like real wool – but they have a secret! They are crafted from recycled plastic bottles, helping to stop them going into landfill. This innovative material also means these blankets are machine washable, mould and mildew resistant, UV-stable and stain resistant. Choose your favourite colour here. There are also matching cushions if you fancy spoiling yourself this autumn!
