Embracing autumn to make your home a cosy, welcoming haven

Published by Tara Punter | September 26th, 2025

The days are getting shorter, the evenings have turned downright chilly and the leaves are turning gorgeous shades of red, gold and amber… Autumn is here and even if you adore long summer days and endless sunshine, it’s time to lean into the cosy season and prepare to spend more time indoors. In this month’s blog we’re sharing our top tips to help you embrace autumn and create a welcoming haven away from cold nights and cooler, wetter weather outside. Let’s get started!

Layer up with textiles

Nothing says autumn quite like soft, sumptuous layers to cosy up in. This is the season to swap lightweight summer fabrics for textures that bring warmth when you need it on cold evenings. Think of curling up on the sofa with one of our soft and warm throws or sinking your feet into a 100% pure wool hand-tufted rug after a long day. We love Liv Interior’s recycled cotton throws in a timeless floral design because they’re brushed to make them so very soft to the touch! For an even toastier layer, Brita Sweden’s throws are made from pure Norwegian wool and will keep you snug even on the coldest winter nights. A sheepskin rug draped over a chair or laid on the floor by your bed adds both comfort and character… just imagine stepping out of bed and burying your toes in warm plush sheepskin instead of a cold, hard floor. The beauty of textiles is that they’re easy to switch and layer, giving your home a fresh seasonal feel without a big change.

Create a warm and welcoming glow

As daylight fades earlier, the right lighting makes all the difference. Overhead lights can feel harsh, so turn to table lamps, candles or lanterns to cast a softer glow. Even a string of fairy lights thoughtfully hung over around the chimney breast or in a dark corner can bring a little magic into darker evenings. Choosing warm-toned bulbs rather than those that deliver bright blueish-white light will create a golden hue that makes your rooms feel instantly more inviting.

Bring the best of the outdoors inside

Autumn is a beautiful season to showcase the colours of nature indoors. A vase filled with leaves turning on branches, seed heads or dried grasses brings in autumnal colour and texture. Bowls of pinecones, seasonal foliage or even a cluster of little squashes and pumpkins on the table adds a nod to the time of year. It’s a simple, natural way to connect your interior to the changing landscape outside.

Stop dirt and wet shoes at the door

For many of us, it can be hard to relax in a home that’s not clean, and when there’s rain and mud outside, keeping things nice indoors can be more challenging. Thankfully, there are lots of great products out there to help you stop dirt at the door and create that tranquil, tidy space to unwind. New Turtle Mats featuring Morris & Co motifs combine stylish design with very practical features – the super absorbent cotton tufts absorb water and tiny fibres of the microfibre in the blend hold onto dust and dry dirt. When the Turtle Mat has done its job, just throw it in the washing machine and it will look as good as new again. That means they definitely meet the standard that William Morris himself said: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” There are also gorgeous designs by artist and textile designer Dee Hardwicke and classic Turtle Mat colours and patterns to choose from.

Don’t forget the finishing touch: fragrance

Autumn scents like cinnamon, cedarwood, spiced orange or clove will totally transform the mood of a room. Whether you prefer the subtle, flickering glow of a scented candle, an essential oil diffuser or a room spray, scent helps set the tone and makes home feel like a true retreat.

As the seasons shift, small changes like these, none of which need to cost the earth, can make a big difference in how your home feels. From practical pieces that keep things clean and tidy, to layers of wool, sheepskin and soft lighting that invite you to linger, it’s all about creating a space you’ll look forward to coming back to at the end of the day. Think of it like this: autumn gives us permission to slow down, savour the indoors and enjoy the comforts of home. We say lean in, get cosy and find your next favourite book to hunker down and enjoy! And with our range of throws, rugs and seasonal touches, you’ll find it easy to make your own haven of warmth and style.
