Soft Furnishings For Summer Calm

Published by Tara Punter | May 22nd, 2025

The sun is out, the windows are open, and boy does it feel good after last year’s
washout! We’ve enjoyed such a beautiful spring, with day after day of warm, sunny
weather, that many of us are looking to mirror the sunshine in our own homes. Whether
you’re planning a big project or simply updating your space in small, thoughtful ways,
soft furnishings are one of the easiest ways to bring in a sense of lightness and calm.

From new season rugs to lightweight, airy throws and colourful cushions, here’s how to
bring those spring and summer vibes home, one soft layer at a time.

The shift in season (and mood)

There’s something about spring that calls for colour and light. We wave goodbye to the
weighty textures and darker tones of winter, when we cosy up from early evening
onwards, nesting at home with good TV, candlelight and a crackling fire. In their place
it’s time for sunshine-soaked afternoons, alfresco evenings and throwing doors and
windows open to let the fresh air in.

Luckily, a spring-and summer-ready home doesn’t need a full makeover. A handful of
well-chosen updates – think fresh textiles and soft colour shifts – can change the way a
space feels and functions. Here’s some of our top picks for spring and summer updates
to your home…

Rugs that inject colour into your home

Start from the ground up. A new rug can completely transform a room, especially if
you’re swapping out heavier winter weaves for lighter textures and spring tones. Soft
neutrals, washed pastels, or colourful patterns are perfect for this time of year.

Our current favourite rug designs for spring include Laura Ashley’s Coleby Petals Chalk
Pink
, which combines the pure luxury of 100% pure new wool with a perfect spring and
summer-ready pink shade and subtle floral pattern. Or, if you’d love to add rainbow
shades to your home in a way that’s colourful and understated, the Asiatic Rug Matrix
Pod Pastel
should be top of your list!

Throws for breezy layering

Spring days may be warmer, but cooler evenings still call for a little more comfort, especially if you’re sitting outside late at night. Lightweight throws are perfect for bridging the seasons, adding both warmth and texture without the weight.

The Liv Interior Daisy Fir Sage Throw is made from recycled cotton, so it’s natural and sustainable, and it’s brushed for a soft finish. The design is available in this green option, or in rose or beige for those who love neutrals and pinks! other colours if you prefer! Brita Sweden’s colourful throws are made from wonderfully soft Norwegian lambswool and eco-friendly dyes. This design is called Marta and it’s here shown in Blue, and we think it’s perfect for drawing over the end of a bed, the back of a sofa or your favourite reading chair

Cushions in bloom

When it comes to seasonal updates, cushions are the easiest and most cost-effective way to bring in a new mood.  This spring, think soft botanical prints, playful florals, embroidered textures, and seasonal colour palettes – and it’s a bonus if they’re designed to be used indoors and outdoors! The colourful Liv Interior Poppy Cushion is made from recycled PET plastic bottles so it’s durable, washable and soft. We also love Scion’s range of indoor/outdoor cushions, including this fabulous Pajaro design in Electric Blue – perfect for a spring patio update!

Whether you want a bold burst of pattern or a calming, tone-on-tone look, a few new cushions can give any room an instant lift. Layer them up or rotate a few favourites as the weather warms up

A fresh welcome with mats and runners

It’s easy to forget how much of a difference a hallway mat or kitchen runner can make. These hardworking pieces see a lot of action, and spring is the perfect time to brighten them up.

Swap in fresh designs, maybe something with a nature-inspired print or a lighter colour. The result? A calmer space that’s ready for everyday life. We love the Lorena Canals’s Woolable Runner in Enkang Ivory – it’s also available as a rug if it catches your eye but you’re not looking for a runner.

You don’t need to redecorate from top to toe to enjoy the freshness of spring. With just a few simple swaps – rugs, throws, cushions and mats – your home can feel lighter and beautifully in tune with the season ahead.
